Project Idea :
This project goal is to provide a safe space for children and their mothers to heal , play and learn. It's a rehabilitation center for children who had been abused and are sufferings from abuse effects and also for kids to learn how to identify and prevent abuse. Also , to spared awareness in the community.
Target group :
- children aged 7-12 years old ( with caregivers with mental health issues and low income and financial stress
- Caregivers
- Community ( schools , child centers ,
Type of abuse :
Causes of child abuse can include:
- Caregivers with drug or alcohol issues- Caregivers with mental health issues, including depression
- Caregivers who don’t understand children’s needs or development
Issues :
Child abuse is not s new issue , but the number of the cases it has been increasing and the problem is that more than 90% of the cases are not reported at all many reasons , could be that the abuser in most of the cases is one of the parents and can be also that the lack of awareness about abuse and how to deal with it properly.
“The abuse can be caused by parents or caregivers who cannot control their temper when dealing with children. They may also lack understanding of children’s emotional development and needs.”
- Cases of child abuse may be related to the financial difficulties of a family, as well as to drug abuse or mental disorder affecting adults.
In Malaysia :
- According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), only extreme child abuse cases are reported while some 90 per cent go unreported
- Many of the reported cases point to family breakdown and substance abuse by parents.
Why ?
The impact of abuse is long-lasting as children often carry their trauma into adulthood, leaving them more likely to develop mental problems and even commit suicide. They also have the potential of turning into abusers themselves
stricter laws and punishments are not enough. Caregivers need to better understand children’s needs. They also need training to recognise signs of abuse,
What we need :
- Studies show violence mainly happens at home, schools, educational institutions, community settings and care centres. It is at these locations that child-friendly helplines are needed. Reporting procedures should encourage reporting
- Procedures that exist are tedious and discourage reporting. Helplines must help, not hamper
Training parents and guardians can prevent or stop child abuse. This has been proven through research,
How ?
Rescue
Play therapy – Young children with PTSD can benefit from play therapy techniques, especially when they are unable to comprehend or verbalize their thoughts about the trauma. Games, art, and other techniques can be used to help a child build resilience and process the trauma through play.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) – There is a trauma-focused style of this common therapy treatment that is frequently used in working with children and teens with PTSD. This type of therapy helps correct irrational or incorrect thoughts a young person might have about the event, and it can also help them develop skills for reducing anxiety and stress.
