FORUM 02

"Design adds value faster than it adds costs." -- Joel Spolsky, web programmer, writer, and creator of Trello.

Sometimes we heard people say, "why should I pay for design? ANYONE can design..." The idea of design is always being narrowed-down with statements saying that design is simply an action that ANYONE can do.

How do we, as designers can over come that?

People know that good design is effective and necessary, yet for some reason, they don’t personally feel it’s worth paying for. There are several reasons why that might be, but, arguably, the most important has to do with psychology. People, at large, like to believe that they are creative on some level, even if their profession has absolutely nothing to do with design whatsoever, and when someone think that your work is easy and they can do it themselves then for sure they won't feel the need to pay you for it.

Non-designers generally see design as making things pretty. They don’t value design for what it is. Because they see the pretty and not all the work we do and the design and thinking process , they can’t see all the value we bring. They can’t see us thinking about the smallest detail in the design/ product/service , they have no idea how much blood, sweat, and tears went into coming up with a good design.

In my opinion, I think it's really important to be confident about your design and the value you believe you can bring , because when someone is trying to negotiate with you , it's like they are negotiating your value, skills and talent and u need to protect theses things , and that's why designers should be confident. Also as I mentioned, that clients/non-designers, don't know a lot about the design process , so I think that it's important for designers to explain and educate clients about the whole process , this breakdown session will creates transparency and build trust. It's important for them to know the importance of designers and what we can do. And NO! NOT ANYONE can design!
